As they progress through the ranks, they gain confidence, improve their skills, and begin to understand the virtues that define a true martial artist.

One of the most significant milestones in that journey is earning the title of Page at Arms.

While many martial arts schools recognize advancement through belts or stripes, the title of Page at Arms represents something deeper. It is not awarded simply because a student has attended class or learned a certain number of techniques. It is earned by demonstrating the maturity and responsibility expected of a young martial artist.

More Than Learning to Fight

At Knight Errant Academy, martial skill and character are developed together.

A student who becomes a Page at Arms has shown that they understand an important truth: the purpose of martial training is not to dominate others, but to learn discipline, self-control, and respect.

Before students begin controlled sparring, they must first demonstrate that they can be trusted with the responsibility that comes with it.

This trust is earned through consistent effort, respectful behavior, careful attention to safety, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

What Is a Page at Arms?

Historically, a page was a young noble serving and learning under experienced knights. Before advancing further, they were expected to prove themselves worthy of greater responsibilities.

Our modern Order of the Page draws inspiration from that tradition.

A Page at Arms is a student who has developed the foundational skills of movement, balance, coordination, and control while also demonstrating the character expected within the Academy.

They have shown they can:

• Follow instruction carefully.

• Train safely with others.

• Show respect to instructors and classmates.

• Remain composed during challenging exercises.

• Demonstrate honesty and good sportsmanship.

• Accept both success and correction with humility.

These qualities are every bit as important as physical skill.

The Beginning of Controlled Sparring

Earning the title of Page at Arms also marks a student’s readiness to begin more advanced partner training.

Controlled sparring is not about winning or losing. It is an opportunity to apply techniques against a resisting partner while learning timing, judgment, distance, and decision-making in a safe and supervised environment.

Students quickly discover that sparring is one of the greatest teachers of humility. Every exchange offers lessons that cannot be learned through solo practice alone.

More importantly, students learn to care for their training partners. Respect and safety always come before competition.

Character Before Victory

One of the core principles of Knight Errant Academy is that rank reflects both skill and character.

A student who displays excellent technique but poor sportsmanship has not yet reached the standard expected of a Page at Arms.

Likewise, a student who shows courage, humility, and perseverance while continuing to improve demonstrates the qualities we seek to encourage.

Our goal is not simply to develop capable martial artists, but honorable young people who carry these lessons into their homes, schools, and communities.

From this point forward, students continue refining their martial abilities while preparing for future advancement into the Order of the Squire.
