A Parent’s Guide to Progression in Youth Medieval Martial Arts

At Knight Errant Academy of Chivalry in Henderson, Nevada, advancement in the Order of the Page is about much more than learning techniques. Each degree represents growth in skill, responsibility, discipline, and character.

Unlike many martial arts systems that focus primarily on belts or stripes, the Order of the Page follows a progression inspired by medieval traditions. Students earn advancement through demonstrated ability, understanding, and the virtues expected of honorable martial artists.

Novice

Every journey begins as a Novice.

New students learn the foundations of movement, balance, safety, and respect. They discover how to stand, move, and work with others while becoming familiar with the traditions and etiquette of the Academy.

The Novice learns that progress comes through patience and practice.

A Novice develops:

• Discipline

• Attention

• Respect

• Confidence

Companion

As students gain experience, they become Companions.

A Companion is no longer simply learning for themselves. They begin helping others, setting a good example, and showing consistency in their training. Companions understand that martial arts is not just about individual success but about supporting their fellow students.

A Companion develops:

• Teamwork

• Courtesy

• Responsibility

• Humility

Page

The title of Page represents a student who has embraced the traditions and expectations of the Order.

Pages demonstrate proficiency in the fundamentals and understand the virtues that guide honorable conduct. They are expected to show leadership, perseverance, and integrity both inside and outside the classroom.

A Page develops:

• Leadership

• Integrity

• Courage

• Prowess

Page at Arms

The title of Page at Arms is earned by students who have shown maturity, control, and readiness for the responsibilities that come with controlled sparring and higher levels of training.

A Page at Arms understands that skill without character has little value. They demonstrate restraint, sportsmanship, and respect for their training partners.

This title marks an important milestone and prepares the student for future advancement into the Order of the Squire.

A Page at Arms develops:

• Sportsmanship

Advancement Through Character

At Knight Errant Academy of Chivalry, advancement is never measured solely by physical ability. Strength and skill are important, but so are honesty, humility, courage, courtesy, and respect.

Our goal is not simply to create capable martial artists, but to help young people grow into honorable men and women who possess both confidence and character.

Through the Order of the Page, students discover that true progress is measured not only by what they can do, but by who they become.
